Edward Marriott
Detective Constable Edward Marriott.
Born 1862 in Hackney, London. Resident of 24 Spital Square, Norton Folgate and later Hackney where he lived with his wife Emily (b.1863); they had six children, Emily (b.1887), Samuel (b.1890), Charles (b.1894), Eva (b.1896), George (b.1899) and Edward (b.1900)[1]. Joined City of London Police in 1885 (warrant no.5830). Retired in 1909 following injuries sustained whilst on duty.[2]
Detective Marriott had been searching passageways in the City on the night of 29th September 1888. He was at the corner of Houndsditch by St Botolph's Aldgate talking to Detectives Daniel Halse and Robert Outram when they were informed of the murder of Catherine Eddowes at 1.58am, 30th September. They at once proceeded to Mitre Square.[3]
Marriott did not testify at the subsequent inquest.
