Resident of 22 Christian Street who was seen by Fanny Mortimer walking down Berner Street on the night of Elizabeth Stride's murder. Goldstein was carrying a black shiny bag and passed the International Working Men's Educational Club; he looked up at the window on his way past before turning into Fairclough Street.

The day after the murder, Goldstein presented himself at Leman Street Police Station and identified himself as the man Mrs. Mortimer had seen. He had been returning home from a coffee shop in Spectacle Alley, Whitechapel and his bag merely contained empty cigarette boxes.

The lack of publicity surrounding the innocence of Leon Goldstein may well have allowed rumours about men with black bags to spread unchecked, inadvertantly creating one of the more enduring Ripper myths.[1]
