Sarah Smith
From Jack the Ripper Wiki
Witness at Alice McKenzie's inquest.
Sarah Frances Smith was born c.1856 in Woolwich, Kent. Lived at the Whitechapel Baths and Wash House, Goulston Street, with her husband Richard who was a retired police officer and superintendent of the wash house[1]. Her room overlooked the murder site in Castle Alley.
According to her inquest testimony, she went to bed between 12.15 and 12.30am, 17th July 1889. She did not sleep, but heard nothing until she received a knock at the door and heard the police whistle. She said that had there been a cry or scream she would most certainly have heard it as her bed-stead was against the wall adjoining Castle Alley.[2]
