James Green
Witness at Annie Chapman's inquest.
Worked for Bayley's Packing-case manufacturers at 23a Hanbury Street. Decribed as a man of medium height with short, neatly plastered-down hair. Living at 36 Acton Street, Burdett Road, Poplar.
He arrived at Bayley's at about 6.10am on the morning of 8th September 1888. He was standing outside the entrance with James Kent, a fellow employee, waiting for more hands to turn up when they were summoned to the backyard of 29 Hanbury Street by John Davis. They were accompanied by Henry Holland who had been passing on Hanbury Street. The men went to view the body, but except for Holland, did not go into the yard. Green then left the premises with Kent.
He testified that he saw nobody touch the body and believed that nobody actually went near it. He is then believed to have returned to the workshop at Bailey's. He saw Inspector Joseph Chandler arrive, by which time he was on the steps of the workshop. He claimed that there was nobody in the yard at that time, but that a mob had gathered by the front door of No.29.
